The Greek tortoise or spur thigh tortoises as they are also known as, are found in over three continents. There currently are at least 20 known subspecies of this tortoise. They are found throughout northern Africa, the eastern part of Europe, parts of Asia and have even been found in the south of Spain. In captivity they enjoy hot and dry surroundings to live in, along with a nice hide box to cool off in and regulate their body temperature.
They only grow to be about 7 to 8 inches in size. This makes them one of the best tortoises to keep indoors. One of the main characteristics of these tortoises is the “spurs” that are found on their thighs along with the two small tubercles on the tail. The color of the shell can varies from a bright yellow to a dark brown. The shell is also decorated with different amounts of dark spots and patches of color. As babies we feed them fresh chopped greens dusted with D-3 along with moist tortoise pellets. It is important to feed a diet that is high in fiber and low in protein for optimum health and shell growth. Some of our customers have told us, they like to offer a cuttle bone as well for extra calcium. We also soak them in warm room temperature water three times a week for 20 to 30 minutes to allow them to drink. As babies you do not want to leave a watering bowl in the habitat with them, as they will most likely drown. Currently our baby Greek tortoises are about the size of a Ping-Pong ball or one to two inches. They were all born this year and are healthy, active and full of energy. We promise you will fall in love with our baby Greek tortoise for sale.
